An MP has appealed to the Royal Mail to encourage more people to send Christmas cards by introducing an annual 25p second class festive stamp.

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans tabled an Early Day Motion before Parliament to help stop the declining sales of Christmas cards, expected to be down by over 100 million this year from 2005.

Mr Evans said: “It would not be Christmas without the cards and I am particularly concerned about what the declining sales of cards means for the children of today, who are almost born with a smartphone in their hands.

“The email inbox is not the same as the letter box at Christmastime and I hope that Royal Mail will take on board my suggestion and keep one of the most important Christmas traditions alive.”

In the motion, Mr Evans proposed that the House of Commons recognises that with 900 million festive cards sold in the UK each year, the sending and receiving of Christmas cards is one of the great traditions of the festive season and that this tradition should be recognised by the introduction of the stamp and that if sent between December 1st and 14th is guaranteed to arrive
before Christmas Day.

I like a turkey at Christmas but they are very expensive.

Perhaps some MP would like to campaign for turkeys to be £1 each during the Christmas period.

Put down the price of Christmas cards instead. They have to be the cheapest envelopes in the business and yet a small piece of printed cardboard costs several times the value of a stamp - all the cards are printed in their 10,000s every hour and yet everyone is collected, sorted and delivered mostly by hand for the princely sum of 54p

We should be like hotels/holiday companys/airlines who put the prices up at school holidays, summer, Christmas, British GP etc etc - no 2c during the Christmas period and £1 minimun 1c postage charge. Serious? I f***ing well am
