A Lancashire postman stamped his authority on the opposition when he appeared on an iconic TV quiz show.
Gary Wright has made it through to the semi-finals of BBC’s Mastermind next year.
Sat in the famous black chair, the postie, who works in Chorley where he lives, put his general and specialist knowledge to the test as question master John Humphrys fired questions at him.
But Gary, 48, was up the challenge, amassing a total of 27 points - 13 of them from his specialist subject ‘the history of Las Vegas’ - to see him through.
Gary got onto the show after applying online.
Episode 12, which has just been aired, was filmed at the BBC in Salford a few months ago.
Originally from Blackburn, Gary, who lives with girlfriend Gill, from Chorley, said he chose his specialist subject because of his fondness for Las Vegas down the years.
He said: “I first went there in 1992 when I was a student. It’s an interesting town.”
For the semi-final, he has already chosen the specialist subject of the hit TV comedy show Men Behaving Badly, and if the makes it to the final, he will answer questions on the rock band Marillion.
Other subjects chosen by Gary’s fellow contestants for the episode were, the Anne books by LM Montgomery, Paul Simon and the Western films of John Ford.
Gary, who has been a postman in Chorley since 2001, on rounds in Wheelton and Whittle-le-Woods area, said he is a regular attender, with friends, of pub quiz nights at venues such as the Red Lion in lower Wheelton, the Golden Lion in Higher Wheelton and the Sea View in Whittle-le-Woods.
Work colleagues are keeping tabs on his progress.
“I’ve mentioned it to one or two people beforehand,” he said.
“They’re quite chuffed, I’ve heard.”
