Postman donates to maternity services after they cared for his premature son

A generous postman delivered an £820 donation to NHS Lanarkshire’s maternity services after they cared for his premature son.

Kenny McCrimmon tackled a half marathon to raise the cash for Wishaw General Hospital’s neonatal unit in tribute to the staff who looked after his son Oliver, who arrived 11 weeks early, weighing just one pound 14 ounces.

Oliver’s unscheduled appearance in January was the second time Kenny and wife Carol have experienced the expert care at the unit.

Their daughter Emma, now 10, was born 10 weeks early and was looked after there for five weeks.

Kenny, from Carnbroe, said: “Oliver had to be born by caesarean section because Carol had pre-eclampsia and problems with blood flow through the umbilical cord.

“He was in the unit for 12 weeks but he is thriving now, thanks to the medical care he received.

“I was determined to raise funds for the hospital because the staff have played such a key role in our children’s lives, so I started training to do a 10k then decided to push myself and go for a half marathon.

“I was pretty unfit at first but I lost a few pounds along the way."

The 44-year-old took on the challenge of the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon and was delighted to finish in a time of 2:02:29 at the event in Glasgow on October 4.


Carol, who is a nurse at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie, working in orthopaedic rehabilitation for older people. added: “I’m very proud of Kenny for doing the run and raising the money because the neonatal unit has been so important to our family. It has saved my life twice and saved the lives of both of our children.

“It was even harder going through it this time as Oliver was in the unit for even longer than Emma.

“We’d particularly like to mention consultant neonatologist Dr Sam Ibhanesebhor and his team of doctors and the amazing specialised neonatal intensive care unit midwives.”

Susan Stewart, NHS Lanarkshire head of midwifery services, added: “We’d like to thank Kenny and Carol for their very generous donation.

“All of our maternity and neonatal staff work tirelessly to ensure the best possible care is given to the mothers and babies we look after, and it is wonderful to have their commitment appreciated and recognised in this way.”
