Jeremy Corbyn is to gatecrash the Conservative conference in Manchester next week by speaking at a rally organised by the postal workers’ union.

A series of anti-austerity protests are scheduled in the city during the conference. On Monday, the opening day, Corbyn is due to address a rally, one of a number of events during a national week of action organised by the People’s Assembly, an anti-austerity campaign group.

Traditionally party leaders avoid each other’s conferences, and give them the space to set out their political messages without interference. It is rare for a party leader to visit the city where another leader is hosting their conference.

Corbyn will speak at Manchester cathedral on the future of UK postal services, under the banner of the People’s Post campaign, organised by the Communication Workers Union (CWU). The campaign is due to broaden into a wider attack on government spending cuts.

Royal Mail has already been privatised, and the Labour leadership has no plans to bring it back into public ownership if it was elected.

Other speakers at the event include Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green party, writers Owen Jones and Kevin Maguire, as well as Lindsey German, the chair of the Stop the War coalition.

The CWU general secretary, Dave Ward, said: “We are delighted to host such a high-profile public meeting and invite the people of Manchester and the surrounding areas to come out in force to support the People’s Post and debate the future of our country.

“This event takes place during the Tory party conference. We are sending a clear message to the government by taking our campaign to the heart of their key calendar event. This is and always will be – the People’s Post.
