Royal Mail considering merging Dumbarton and Alexandria delivery offices

The College Way office in Dumbarton could merge with the Alexandria unit in Lomond Industrial estate.


Royal mail have confirmed they are considering merging the two offices after staff were told about the possible move last week.

Although nothing is confirmed, staff allege they have been told the move could take place in the spring.

Royal Mail spokeswoman, Ronit Wolfson, said:

“Royal Mail is currently exploring options for the possibility of relocating Dumbarton Delivery Office into Alexandria Delivery Office.

“This is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business and work to increase the efficiency of its operation as well as providing delivery offices which are fit for purpose for our staff and for our customers. No final decision has been made yet and we are committed to continuing to provide a first class service to all our business and residential customers.

“As a commercial business, we are operating in a market where letters are in structural decline and where there is competition in letters and parcels. The Dumbarton office is not fit for purpose, as we now deal with many more parcels. We expect that any move will have a minimal impact on our customers.

“Whenever a delivery office move goes ahead, we always consider alternative parcel pick up facilities and offer our customers alternative means of receiving undelivered items of mail, including delivery to a designated neighbour, re-delivery to the addressee, to another local address specified by the customer, six days a week.

“We also operate an open and honest policy with our people and we are currently in discussions about this proposal with them and our trade unions.

“We have a strong track record of managing change and if the move goes ahead, detailed planning will take place to ensure a smooth transition for our operations, our people and the service we provide to our customers.

“There will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of this proposed merger.”
