you are missing the point though !!

it WAS a public service, now there are competitors it has to compete !

The problem at the moment is its neither. The General public and most postal workers want it to remain a service and which in my humble opinion it should be. However the "City", senior management within Royal Mail and large sections of Middle and Lower management seem to want it run as a business with the main aim of making a profit.

However, both viewpoints are stymied because the Government has adopted a halfway house. It has heaped regulations on postal operators that effectively allow small operators to use Royal Mails infrastructure to actually deliver the mail, meaning that although we "Royal Mail" do the majority of the work in delivering the DSA mail we don't actually make any profit from it. The Government are responsible for the halfway house we have now and they should make their minds up very quickly before Royal Mail fails.

We cant be a mixture of service and profit we have to one either and they had better make their mind up. Are we a Service first with profit a secondary concern. Or are we a proper business that faces the same challenges and rules as our competitors and if we are we should be able to charge DSA operators a fair and profitable price without Post watch or Postcom breathing down our necks. Yes have them but keep them at arms length from the business.

Good points and I think what is planned is that Royal Mail will split distribution, mail centres and delivery into separate businesses. Deliveries will de like Powerlines and gas pipes, we will continue to deliver all the mail, but, the other businesses will have to fight the private sector for their share of business. This will happen because no one else will work to the USO and can afford to set up rival delivery networks. But mail sortation centres and transport can be easily competed against. So we have to fight to keep all in the one business. Remember UNITY WILL KEEP US STRONG

And as a true business RM would operate in a commercial manner : fewer collections and collection points; fewer deliveries an end to the USO, price increases to the level where it becomes practical for competitors to invest in their own network None of which would be welcomed by Allans customers . So they will just get us to do it on the cheap
