CWU Left Click registers its 1000th learner

For those of you that haven't come across it yet, CWU Left Click is our online learning platform that offers a range of courses that can either be studied individually on your laptop or tablet, or as blended learning in a group environment.

Trish Lavelle, Head of Education, is delighted to have achieved this milestone, "When we were planning our activities for this year we set ourselves a minimum of 200 new registrations but hoped to reach 600. To have smashed that target less than half way into that year proves that there is a clear demand for this sort of learning amongst our members and reps."


Courses that have proved popular include, The No Nonsense Guide To Digital Photography, IT For Reps and other short IT modules, An Introduction To Employment Tribunals and an Introduction To Annual Conference.

Left Click is also being used to deliver the online section of two blended courses, Fair & Equal In The CWU and Branch Secretaries training. We have also just launched ULR Essentials, which will be a constantly developing space for both new and established ULRs to seek out new information and resources - and to share their favourite resources with others.

These courses have also seen the introduction of the characters who will make up our virtual branch. So far we have been introduced to Brian the Branch Secretary and Lisa the ULR. Trish explained the thinking behind creating a cast of virtual characters, "E-learning gives you the opportunity to explore a range of scenarios but it runs the risk of becoming a little impersonal. This is our way of addressing that. We chose animated characters because posed models always look a little too soulless and corporate. Although they're animated we think Brian, Lisa and the others add a bit of character to proceedings. We hope you like them."

We are currently working on new Industrial training for reps in RM and with Tyne & Wear Clerical on an update of the Grievance & Disciplinary course for Reps in EE. "Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive up to this point," said Trish, "and although there will always be the odd technical glitch with any online system these have generally been easily resolvable. At a time when education funding is constantly under threat, Left Click is proving to be a useful addition to our arsenal."
