Royal Mail stresses ‘no decision made’ as Carnoustie sorting office campaign gathers support

The Royal Mail has said “no final decision” has been made over plans to move Carnoustie’s post office to Dundee.

Staff were told on Tuesday that changes were under consideration by Royal Mail.

The sorting office on Queen Street could be closed, with operations moved elsewhere.

But the Royal Mail said the employer is discussing any move with its own union and people in the branch.

“Royal Mail is exploring an option to relocate Carnoustie delivery office to its Dundee East office in spring 2016,” a spokesman said.

“This is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business and work to increase the efficiency of its operations.

“We have just started to talk to our union and our people about this potential move and seek their feedback. No final decision has been made.

“If the move goes ahead, detailed planning will take place to ensure a smooth transition for our operations, our people and the service we provide to our customers ... there will be no job losses.”

One of the suggestions could see staff relocated to the Dundee East sorting office on Ivory Place, West Pitkerro Industrial Estate, behind Sainsbury’s Claypotts store.

The petition states: “Carnoustie people and those of other local communities want local sorting and local collection offices.

“We don’t want 24-mile round trips to collect our parcels and signed-for mail.”

“Drip by drip” announcements over the future of Post Office counters in Angus have previously been criticised by the area’s MP.

Mike Weir has been a vocal critic of incremental proposals to change service delivery across the county.
