Richard started working part-time in 1982, working with his father Don who was a postman on Sark for 22 years.
In 1988 Richard went full-time, whilst his father became the part-timer.
Since then he has worked alongside another postman and delivered post to his share of the island.
For Richard that includes Little Sark, which means crossing the Coupée between Sark and Little Sark. He thinks he has crossed it 17,260 times! This has been in all weathers, with the worst, he says, being in the hurricane of 1987.
Being a postman on Sark means being very flexible as the post can be delayed by fog, which affects it flying into Guernsey, and very strong winds occasionally delay the crossing from Guernsey to Sark by sea.
Richard says the biggest change he has seen during his 33 years in the job is the proportion of letters to parcels. The internet means there are far fewer letters but online shopping means a lot more packages and parcels to deliver.
Richard is handing back his bike as he turns 65 this year, but he says he has loved his career.
It has been a very enjoyable time, I've enjoyed my job. It's been quite interesting being out in all weathers and I've also enjoyed my customers because they've always been very friendly and it's a nice friendly place to do the job, and of course you have no cars to contend with.
