A SINK hole that opened up overnight at the entrance to Royal Mail Langport delivery office has been identified as an old well that was covered by building work.

Engineers said that the well, which has been roughly estimated at 5 foot across and 15 feet deep, may have come from the time before a railway existed in the town. It was reported last night after part of the driveway to the delivery office collapsed.

Customers are being advised to stay away from the office on safety grounds, but are advised that they can collect their parcels from the Somerton office.

The office on Westover Trading Estate took emergency action last night to prevent their vehicles being affected.

Sean Mills, acting manager of the Somerton and Langport offices, said: "All parcels that need collection will be sent up to the Somerton Office for customers to collect. The vans were moved last night before it got bigger overnight so a normal service should run.

"Until we investigate what has happened, we are taking every precaution."

Mark Barley, field operations manager for the Royal Mail said: "We will have more inspectors coming to visit tomorrow but we do not yet know exactly what will happen next. However there is no impact on public safety as the area in question has been cordoned off."
