Dive-bombing seagulls launching “swooping attacks” are preventing postmen from delivering mail in a seaside town.

It’s thought the gulls at Wern Las in Belgrano near Abergele are aggressively trying to protect chicks in the breeding season.

Squawks of protest are being made by customers but Royal Mail says staff safety is paramount.

Debbie Roberts, who works as a safety advisor, lives on the estate.

She said: “Last week, we noticed we hadn’t got any mail for what we thought was a week, but it’s hard to tell because you don’t always know if you’re due any mail.

“We put something on Facebook asking if anyone else had not had their post.

“One of my Facebook friends said a postman had refused to deliver because of the seagulls.

“Last year, somebody was scratched by a seagull. They’ve been known to swoop down in defence of their babies.

“A lot of residents have had no post from Royal Mail for days. I’m fuming.”

Some residents can collect their post from the Rhyl sorting office but some elderly people don’t have cars, she added.

The Royal Mail said its workers’ safety is paramount.

Spokeswoman Val Bodden said: “The postman delivering to addresses on the Wern Las estate in Belgrano, Abergele, has been experiencing swooping attacks by seagulls as he delivered mail on his round there over the past few weeks.

“We are aware that these kinds of attacks do occur at this time of year across the country as gulls are nesting.

“The safety of our people is paramount to Royal Mail and these swooping attacks have made it difficult for the postman to continue to do his job.

“We are taking the mail out daily and, where safe to do so, we are delivering mail to the residents.”

Royal Mail apologised to the customers affected and promised to continue to monitor the situation every day.

Ms Bodden added: “Customers are aware of the problem and we have advised them that they can collect their mail from the delivery office in Vale Road, Rhyl.”

The Communications Workers Union, which represents postal staff, has also been approached for comment.

What nonsense. Gulls have no claws and will NOT fly into any large object (including you!) at speed as they would injure themselves, break their beak or wings. They do 'near misses' and crap at the same time usually to warn you off. You see them doing this often to a fox, cat or dog too. Sometimes they see reflections in polished cars and attack them with crap (this is why you might see one car specifically targeted and covered in guano and the ones nearby relatively clean).

They are a noisy, filthy nuisance in towns though and do need culling from urban nesting sites back to the coast.

Round here they are called the 'KFC gulls' as they live on discarded takeaway food.

I know the area and have delivered on there. The same pair nest at bungalow level every year here and are very aggressive. Other pairs in the series of closes and back alleys may be also at the same game. However I do wonder if the saying 'where there's a will there's a way' has been forgotten. The birds are really a very clever form of vermin to street dwellers like us, a shame they are a protected species.

I was in Weymouth this weekend and saw at least 5 people be attacked by seagulls.One young girl had a badly gashed hand and was very frightened and upset.
