Teresa Roper, postwoman at Aldringham cum Thorpe for 35 years says farewell to villagers gathered at the local pub, the Parrot and Punchbowl, and thanks them for all the gifts she has recieved
For more than 30 years she has delivered gifts, greetings cards and messages of goodwill to the people of two Suffolk villages.
But it was postie Teresa Roper’s turn to be showered with goodies as she prepared to retire from doing the rounds in Aldringham cum Thorpe, near Leiston.
Villagers had a secret whip-round when they heard she would no longer be delivering to their doorsteps and going out of her way to perform little acts of kindness like moving people’s dustbins for them.
Many four-legged residents will be equally saddened not to be receiving their morning dog biscuit courtesy of Miss Roper, of Leiston, who was in the army before joining the postal service 35 years ago.
A farewell gathering was held at the Parrot and Punchbowl pub – opened specially early by landlady, Shelia Fleming – where locals handed her a bouquet of flowers and a treasure box containing £1,370. She also received a number of gifts from residents on her final rounds.
