FORMER Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Holloway famously suggested painting Smeaton’s Tower green in honour of the Pilgrims and the city’s love for its team.
And while that may never have come to fruition, it looks like one avid fan has decided the city needs a few more splashes of green about.
A postbox in Stoke Road, on the corner of Wyndham Square, has been painted green in the colours of Argyle, to replace the striking red (the dastardly colours of Exeter City Football Club) which the Royal Mail is synonymous with.
One eagle-eyed reader spotted the shabbily painted postbox, with some red patches still showing through from underneath, encouraging The Herald to have a look for itself to discover that it was indeed true.
Val Bodden, Royal Mail spokeswoman, said the audacious colour change would not last long, however - they have already sent an employee to paint it back to its “iconic” red.
“We can confirm that we will be sending out an engineer to re-paint the postbox back to red in Stoke Road,” said Ms Bodden.
“Royal Mail's postboxes are a great British icon, connecting consumers, communities and companies.
“There are over 115,000 postboxes across the country and we are very proud of them and we put a great deal of effort into maintaining and painting them.
“We repaint and refurbish them on a regular basis and we also respond directly to reports by our staff and customers about individual boxes that require urgent attention.”
Ms Bodden would not disclose how much it would cost to send out an engineer to give the box a fresh lick of paint.
