Royal Mail probe into missing mail and cash

It is claimed some of the money was stolen from birthday cards.

A manager has been suspended pending the outcome of an inquiry by the company's internal security unit.

Royal Mail confirmed the investigation is taking place and said it takes a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty, warning that it is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail.

The company said it will seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

A considerable amount of money is understood to be missing.

While money is not supposed to be sent by the post, it is nevertheless something many people do, particularly the elderly.

The news has caused deep concern and Citizens Advice said many people have already contacted them, worried about their mail.

Pol Callaghan said: “We know that 25,000 people last year believe that their mail was tampered with in Northern Ireland in terms of visits to our website so it’s at least more of a cause for concern than we’d like to be the case.”

Royal Mail's security department has the power to submit cases to the Public Prosecution Service, which in turn decides whether to press charges.

It insists any breaches of trust are rare, and pledges that the investigation will be thorough and will get to the bottom of what went on.
