Newquay postie in midst of 1,000 mile mission to John O'Groats to raise cash for Alzheimer's charity

A NEWQUAY postman is in the midst of a near 1,000 mile cycle to raise money for a charity helping people with Alzheimer's disease.

Paul Hampshire and his brother David left Land's End on Friday to cycle to John O'Groats, where they hope to arrive on Sunday.

Over the course of their journey they will cycle 949 miles, and the pair have already raised more than £550 towards their £1,500 target.

All the money will be donated to the Alzheimer's Society in memory of Mr Hampshire's wife's grandfather, who died from the illness.

Scotsman Mr Hampshire, 33, who has been living in Newquay with his wife Lisa for six years, trained vigorously for the challenge.

"Lisa's grandpa Douglas was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003, and watching him slowly deteriorate until he sadly passed away in March 2013, I have wanted to help raise funds to aid the fight against this terrible disease," he said.

"The early signs of his Alzheimer's were forgetting family members' names, confusion of daily events and memorable dates in his life.

"By 2009 these symptoms progressively became more severe with complete memory loss, his muscle function became very difficult making speaking, swallowing, eating and walking almost impossible, resulting in Douglas spending all his day in bed or in his chair.

"Watching someone suffer through this disease is heart-breaking, not only for the person but for the family and friends. Douglas required 24-hour care when his symptoms progressed. He had to be moved into a care home where he passed away. The more money we raise, the better the fight."

Mr Hampshire's wife Lisa said she was "immensely proud" of her husband, who has been playing for Newquay AFC.

"It really touched Paul when he saw how bad the disease is and what it does to the person," Mrs Hampshire said. "I'm very proud of him, and what an achievement this is going to be."
