A couple subjected to 12 months of post misery and missing packages discovered their post had been delivered to an empty house next door for almost a year.

Christopher and Stella Tunnah were alerted to the fact a pile of post had been building up in Cheadle Hulme, Manchester, when the owner returned to check on the house.

Among the items that had gone astray were a package which should have been signed for, gas and electric bills and an invoice from a catalogue company.

The mail was postmarked between July 2014 and March this year, reports Manchester Evening News.

Mr Tunnah said he believes the confusion may partly be due to the fact his property has an enclosed front garden and post has to be delivered via the back of the house.

However, he believes there are adequate signs directing visitors to the rear of the property and that the house is clearly numbered.

Mr Tunnah said: “Once we had no post for three days in a row.

"Imagine if that had been a summons, we would have been taken to court, we could have been in all sorts of trouble.

“Some DVDs went missing and I had to phone up and get them to send them again, so the company has lost out there.

"I have complained in the past about a similar problem and had an apology from Royal Mail’s head office, but this keeps happening.

“There was even post there for three other addresses.

"The whole office needs shaking up, it’s never been the same since the office on Warren Road in Cheadle Hulme was closed.

“The service we have received has been atrocious.”

Royal Mail says measures have now been put in place to prevent the problem from recurring.

A spokesman said: “We apologise for the mis-delivery of items of mail and any inconvenience this has caused.

“Every letter is important to us and we value our quality of service.

"We will be monitoring his mail and a manager has visited Mr Tunnah to re-assure him we take the matter seriously.

“Plans have been put in place to make sure there is no confusion about delivering to his address in future.”
