A postie who has worked the same estate for 35 years was overwhelmed when residents delivered a mountain of birthday cards to his front door.
Jeff Matthews celebrated his 60th birthday in style today when more than 20 friends and neighbours surprised him and brought round scores of cards and a homemade Postman Pat cake.
For the last three-and-a-half decades, Jeff has been delivering mail to the people of Little Hill, Wigston, and often raises an eyebrow when he is seen being followed by his black and white cat - much like his cartoon counterpart.
During his time in Wigston, the dedicated postman says he has more than his share of strange goings-on including finding a dead body.
But today was about thanking the Royal Mail veteran for his years of hard work and local people turned out in force to wish him a happy birthday.
Keith Butteriss, 58, who lives in Pensilva Close, said: "We just wanted to do something nice for him because he's such a friendly guy - your typical friendly, local postie.
"We turned up at his house with the cards and a cake and his cat was there, but it didn't stay for long - he tried to pick it up and it attacked him and ran off. At least he got his cake."
