Postman to run marathon in memory of friend

A postman will show that a friend and colleague has not been forgotten when he runs the London marathon in his memory.

Dave Marlborough, of Melrose Avenue, Borehamwood, will be one of thousands taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 26.

But for Mr Marlborough the day will also mark the first anniversary of the death of his friend and colleague Mick O’Neill.

The two worked at the Royal Mail's Borehamwood branch until Mr O'Neill's death from a brain tumour.

Mr Marlborough said: “It’s quite an emotional time because it’s coming up to the anniversary of his death. I’m doing it in memory of Mick, to remember him and so his family can see he has not been forgotten.”

The 60-year-old is raising money for the Stroke Association, the chosen charity of the Royal Mail.

He has set a target of £2,000, which the Royal Mail has promised to match.

Mr Marlborough is no stranger to long distance running, having run a half marathon in support of Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in Barnet.

His wife Jacky said: “He’s been fortunate enough to get in this year and he is really excited for it. It’s something he’s always wanted to do but until now he’s been unlucky with the ballot.

“He has always been a keen runner and running the marathon is so important because it lets him help other people.

“Dave is also incredibly thankful for the huge support he has received from his family, friends and colleagues at Borehamwood Royal Mail.

“People say it’s the crowds that help you through it, so we’ll try to keep him from flagging and just get him round the course.”

His children, grandchildren and work colleagues will cheer him on with the rest of London on April 26.
