Flying ROBOTS to deliver parcels door to door as drones set to replace postmen in UK

The US retailer wants to use Britain as a testbed for the robot technology after they were unable to get permission in their home country.

Transport minister Robert Goodwill said discussions had started with the company.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday Mr Goodwill said: "I had some people from Amazon coming to see me the other day; they want to replace van deliveries with drone deliveries, and they can't do any trials in the US because they're over-regulated.

"So my favourite word is deregulation, and we need to make sure that wherever you are in the world, and if you want to innovate and you want to invest in this sort of technology, come to the UK because we're here to help you."

Amazon unveiled plans for the use of drones back in 2013. They could replace van deliveries for the group, allowing parcels to be delivered in less than 30 minutes.

The US finally gave approval for Amazon's drone trials last week following a nine month wait.

However, the retail firm has been infuriated with the pace of approval and has often spoken about looking elsewhere for the tests due to the problems it has run into with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The States currently has a host of legislation limiting the use of drones, including banning them for commercial use.

This is why Amazon sounded out the UK, where it has a headquarters in Slough and is also due to open a 15-storey office in central London next year.

One stumbling block in Britain is current rules stating drones must be flown within the line of sight of the pilot, which limits journeys to around 1,600ft.

A spokeswoman for the UK's Department for Transport said talks were at an early stage.

No-one from Amazon was available for comment.

With the amount of parcels nowadays it's inconceivable that thousands of these drones will fill our airspace with the risk of injury to people it's just laughable.

Try reading the OP. The Government Minister who is welcoming this (and deregulation) is a Tory MP, Robert Goodwill, who claimed First Class flight expenses while travelling Economy Class. He said "as a Capitalist, also as a British Conservative, I see it as a challenge to .....make some profit on the system".
He has also been 'double-dipping' - transferring the London flat, paid for by the taxpayer, to his property company, then claiming expenses for staying in London.
