Extra cash to help train new recruits

Experienced postwomen and postmen can earn extra money by volunteering to help train new and existing Royal Mail employees under an improved and expanded 'workplace coach' scheme agreed between the company and the CWU.

Bob Gibson, the union's national officer for delivery members, explains: "The coach, or WPC, system has been in place for several years already, but the lack of robust systems and procedures meant that all too often, volunteers encountered increasing difficulties in the roles, leading to frustration and disillusionment.
Bob Gibson "We had people stepping down after only a short time and a lack of people coming forward to replace them," he continues, and adds: "This was creating a worrying shortage of qualified coaches, with the knock-on effect of inadequate training of new and existing employees."

The newly agreed procedures, which follow several months of detailed and thorough negotiations between the CWU and Royal Mail, offer a comprehensive set of processes and guidelines, clearly defined responsibilities and robust, step-by-step training programmes - both for the workplace coaches (WPCs) and employees.

A weekly WPC allowance of £35 provides a meaningful financial incentive to encourage established members of staff to volunteer.

Bob says that the aim of both the company and the union is for a WPC to be in place, on average, for every group of 25 workers.

"We're a long way short of that ratio at this time and so, if members feel they have sufficient experience within the business, and are interested in volunteering, then they should enquire through their local unit rep," he concludes.

A jointly agreed delivery office 'presentation cascade' regarding the new role and responsibilities of workplace coaches will start next week, and it is scheduled to be the subject of WTLL sessions later this month and early next month.

Train who ???? You need to take staff on to train so that's a waste of money ?? Our wpc said didn't give a s**t about the job am on £35 more then you lot ...??? Silly sad man

We've got 2 or 3 wpcs, doing absolutely diddly squat. Work that waste of money out over the course of a year. Oh and there's the wcm bloke on 35k who does even less than them!
