A community left puzzled after their local post office was left without a postbox may be in luck after company bosses agreed to look into the fiasco.

Last year, Drury Post Office in Buckley was relocated 100 yards down the road to the nearby Londis store - but no postbox went with it.

Instead, frustrated customers were forced to endure long queues to hand their letters to staff over the counter at the store, or travel to the nearest alternative a third of a mile away.

Buckley Town Council wrote to the Post Office questioning why their branch couldn’t have its own box and were told it was because the area already had enough.

Local councillors Mike Peers and Dennis Hutchinson say they are baffled by the response from the company and question how two boxes is all of a sudden enough, when they used to have three.

“It’s only natural where there’s a post office there’s a post box,” said Cllr Hutchinson.

Cllr Peers, who was born and raised in Drury, goes into the shop most days.

He said he is fed up of seeing people having to wait in long queues inside the store to hand over letters to staff when they could be posting letters into a post box outside.

“It should be a one-stop shop but it doesn’t have a post box – it’s ludicrous.

“We were happy for the post office to move to the Londis store but we expected the post box to go with it, it just doesn’t make sense.

“We’ve always had three boxes in Drury, we have done for the last 50 or 60 years, it’s not like we’re asking for something we haven’t had before.”

Believing that the first response to the town council was not good enough, Cllr Peers wrote to Post Office boss Moya Greene directly.

He explained to her that a Royal Mail post van visits the post office a few times a day and could easily empty the box and was delighted to receive a response within hours saying that she will get her team to look into the issue.

Cllr Peers added: “You can’t get much higher than the chief executive officer and if she says she will look into it then I have no reason to doubt her.

“I expect to hear from her within the next two weeks, the town council has written to her as wel, so it’s like a two-pronged attack.”
