Weston-super-Mare's main post office shuts suddenly

Weston-super-Mare's main post office closed last night in sudden and unclear circumstances.

The Post Office released a statement shortly after 6pm which said: "Due to unforeseen contractual issues involving the property we are no longer able to operate Weston-super-Mare post office from its current site at 76 Regent Street from today at 5.30pm."

Julia Marwood, regional network manager, said it was a "very sudden development" and apologised to Post Office Ltd customers. However a further statement confirmed the Post Office will remain open as normal today and tomorrow after on-going talks with the landlord allowed the branch to remain open for a further couple of days or potentially longer

The Post Office has advised customers to use alternative branches on the High Street, Moorland Road and on the Bournville estate after this period . It said that during any closure it would provide a free bus service from the taxi/bus stop outside Tesco on Alexandra Parade to the Bournville post office with pick-ups at 11am, noon, 1 and 2pm.

Post Office Ltd recently consulted over plans to relocate the branch to 84–86 Regent Street. The six-week public consultation has ended and an announcement is due shortly.
