Ridiculous changes to postbox collection times Ilford

Residents in and around the Commonwealth Estate, Ilford, have reacted with anger after learning their post is being taken at 9am instead of 5.30pm.

Roger Backhouse, 64, of Thorold Road, said: “Having the last collection in the early morning is something I’d expect in a deeply rural area, not the heart of town.

“It was handy to get letters posted nearby at 5pm knowing they’d usually reach their destination the following day.

“The postbox I use most on Ley Street is well used – I’ve often found it full – so many people must be hit.

“I predicted the postal service would deteriorate under privatisation but I never expected anything as bad as this.”

Changes have been put into force by Royal Mail at sites across the UK.

The new system means this post will be collected by postmen and women while they undertake their delivery routes.

John Brindley, 54, lives in Auckland Road.

He said: “It is a ridiculous situation.

“Quite often here you don’t get post delivered until 12 or 1 in the afternoon, so if something was on a deadline or urgent you could get off a reply the same day.

“Now you can’t and people will have to find a box on a later collection, or go into Ilford town to the Post Office.”

Sally Hopkins, a spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “We would like to reassure all our customers in Ilford that we will retain a high level of access to late collection posting facilities (4pm or later).

“For this reason, existing postboxes further than half a mile from a late posting facility are not included as part of these changes.

“A significant decline in letter volumes means that many postboxes no longer cover their costs.

“Rather than decommission uneconomic, low-use postboxes, we aim to improve the efficiency of our collections arrangements.”

I remember many years ago TNT saying that they would have a postbox on every street corner.
Until that happens (never) Ilford residents will just have to make do with our collection times.
