Post Office plans ‘deeply disturbing’

South Angus MSP Graeme Dey has urged caution after the latest tranche of Post Office modernisations was announced to include Carnoustie.

The newly modernised branch will be opened at Carnoustie Post Office, 83 High Street, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29.

Services will now be provided from two counter positions, including a secure fortress position and a combi-counter, where the Post Office terminal will sit alongside the retail till.

Mr Dey is most concerned about the loss of privacy: “There is a pattern emerging here which is deeply disturbing.”

The modernisation programme being rolled out has attracted criticism from politicians with Mike Weir MP particularly upset 
by plans afoot in Arbroath and Kirriemuir.

The branch itself will open from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with selected Post Office products and services available from the retail counter during shop opening hours which are 6.30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Sunday. The opening hours will now be increased by 62 additional hours.

Customers will be able to do everything from cash withdrawals from a Post Office Card Account, sending funds abroad using Moneygram, paying bills, buying holiday money, getting insurance, mortgages, savings and top up mobile phones.

Carnoustie Post Office will need to close at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, for the refurbishment to take place.

During this short period of closure Post Office services may be accessed from other branches including: West End Post Office, 43 Barry Road, Carnoustie; Monifieth Post Office, 33 High Street, Monifieth.
