New postal delivery office in Newpark to become Royal Mail ‘hub’ in South Antrim

A NEW postal delivery office is to open at Orchard Way in the Newpark Industrial Estate in the New Year, Royal Mail has confirmed.

It had been reported last year that the site would be operational from this summer, but after some delay the Antrim, Crumlin and Ballyclare postal delivery centres will all be merged into one office as of April 2015, with the move beginning in January.

Ninety-three staff will work out of the new site, with Royal Mail saying that there will be a straight transfer of current staff, with no new jobs created or job losses.

Fifty-two people are employed at the existing Steeple Road premises in Antrim, with another 26 in Crumlin and 15 in Ballyclare.

Royal Mail has said customers visiting the new location in Newpark will be able to 'benefit from a modern enquiry office and dedicated parking facilities', claiming that the move was necessary due to decreasing numbers of letters and increasing volumes of parcels.

There is not anticipated to be any disruption to mail deliveries and collections.

“We are working with our people and our unions to prepare for this relocation. There will be no job losses as a result of the move," said a spokesperson for Royal Mail.

“Our service to customers will continue to be a top priority during this change. Customers can be reassured that we will do all we can to minimise disruption to customers and ensure we maintain the high level of service they expect and deserve from Royal Mail."

Royal Mail's Delivery Collection and Delivery Sector Manager for the Antrim area, Kevin Carabine, said the new office would 'greatly improve' service for customers.

“We are delighted that we will soon be serving our customers in Antrim, Ballyclare and Crumlin from our new office in Orchard Way, Antrim," he said.

“This will greatly improve facilities for both our people and our customers and is part of Royal Mail's ongoing transformation programme and is vital to put our business on a sound, secure and sustainable footing for the future."
