Post Office Xmas strike 'increasingly inevitable'

A pre-Christmas strike by Post Office Admin and Supply Chain workers "is increasingly inevitable" after they returned a resounding 76 per cent majority for action today (Tuesday).

The CWU was forced into calling the vote after Post Office management refused to settle their 2014 pay claim, which was due back in April.

CWU's Andy Furey, the union's national officer for Post Office workers, said: "After initially refusing to negotiate 2014 pay at all, the business then spent several months delaying, prevaricating and quite frankly game-playing over our hard-working members' pay.

"And when they finally set out an offer in the late summer, this was well below the April inflation rate and linked to our acceptance of large-scale job losses.

"Thanks entirely to the unreasonable attitude of management, as matters stand, a pre-Christmas national strike is increasingly inevitable."

"POL can comfortably afford to pay a fair pay rise. This is a company that posted record profits this year - profits created by the hard work and dedication of their staff, our members," Andy continued.

"The workforce has made the major contribution to the company's success and have every right to their fair share."

The CWU's industrial executive meets later today (met today) and a national briefing of CWU workplace reps takes place later this week, after which an announcement will be made on when the industrial action will commence.

"Thanks entirely to the unreasonable attitude of management, as matters stand, a pre-Christmas national strike is increasingly inevitable," Andy warned.

"But, even at this late stage, the Post Office can avoid a pre-Christmas strike - by meeting our members' just claim for a fair pay rise."
