Weymouth Post Office re-opens again after four-day dispute

WEYMOUTH’s main Post Office branch is open and running as normal again this morning.

The branch at 87 St Thomas Street was opened briefly yesterday morning before closing again amid a dispute between operators Smartpost and the landlord.

This morning, a Post Office spokesperson said: “Weymouth Post Office is open today and running as normal under a temporary postmaster.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closure of the branch, and thank the Abbotsbury Road and Dorchester Road Post Office services for taking on the extra custom.

“While sometimes issues outside of our control can impact on service, we are committed to maintaining our physical presence in Weymouth and are pleased that the branch is open again.”

The saga follows the branch’s sudden closure on Saturday when staff and customers were shocked to find the locks had been changed due to a non-payment of rent.

The shop remained closed on Monday but customers were glad to see it was re-opened yesterday.

However, after trading for just two hours, the shop was closed again when former operator Smartpost made a legal challenge questioning the validity of the eviction.

Simon Thompson, from Dorset Community Action said: “I will be asking for safeguards for the future to ensure that this does not happen again.”
