Northampton postal workers pool resources to raise money for charity

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) hired a pool table for the Royal Mail’s flagship South Midlands Mail Centre in Swan Valley and in sixth months they have already raised enough to donate to Cancer Research UK, Poppy’s Place, Marie Curie, Cynthia Spencer Hospice, Alzheimer’s Research UK & Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Gareth Eales, CWU area representative at the South Midlands Mail Centre, said: “I am delighted so much money has been raised in such a short space of time for good causes. The pool table was put in to give our members something to do during their rest periods and the fact we can raise money for charities at the same time is fantastic.

“Our members have already nominated further charities they wish to see benefit moving forward and we are looking at doing something for local food banks approaching the Christmas period to assist people that are financially impoverished - actions of this sort only underline the positive contribution trade unions and postal workers try to have on the wider society and we are very proud of that.”

While 50 per cent of the total profits have to be given back to the pool table hire company, the CWU’s half is all donated.

The other charities nominated for future donations are: Barnardos, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Diabetes UK, Prostate Cancer UK, The Terrence Higgins Trust, Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Care, Animals In Need and Northampton General Hospital Oncology Unit.
