Windmill Drive scoops top spot as best indie postie

A post office at the heart of communities in Bexhill and Sidley has beaten 11,000 branches to be named best in the nation.

Married couple Jonathan and Sarah Armstrong, who run the office on Windmill Drive, said they were “totally over the moon” after winning the Best Independent Post Office prize at the 2014 Retail Industry Awards in London on Thursday (September 25).

Judges praised their customer service - including free package deliveries to those unable to reach the shop - and community links, which include a free library and school educational visits.

After the award, Jonathan took care to credit his five staff. “We consider ourselves a big family team,” he said.

Jonathan and Sarah took over the Windmill Drive office in April 2006, steering it through the threat of closure in 2007-8 with support from their local community. They entered the retail awards around six months ago after their area manager encouraged them to step forward and eventually beat 11,000 rivals.

This week commentors rushed to congratulate the couple on Facebook, with dozens praising the Windmill Drive work ethic and customer service.
