Posties collect £2,500 for cancer charity

Big-hearted posties in Ballymoney did themselves proud when they gave up their time to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The 20 volunteers, including Postman Pat, from the High Street sorting office were hoping for a first-class response from the local community to their recent van pull and street collection - and as usual, they weren’t disappointed raising a staggering £2,500 so far.

In the last seven years the annual event has raised a staggering £30,000 for Cancer Research NI.

Ballymoney postie, Adrian Nicholl, organiser of the event explained: “The van pull is an important part of our charity work and since it’s going to a very worthy cause, we were confident of raising thousands pounds.

“The workforce in Ballymoney, and Postman Pat, were certainly geared up for the two days and everyone who came along had a great deal of fun. This was the first year we have held the van pull on a Friday and it was a great success. Just like the earlier efforts, we found ourselves having no difficulty in getting donations from the public.

“Last year we collected £3,700 which was fantastic...and so far this year we have raised appoximately £2500 from the good people of the toon, and more money is still coming in.”

A Big Breakfast, golf day and much more will also be taking place in aid of the charity, and it will be taking place over the coming weeks. So watch this space for more details.

There are also a number of collection boxes placed around the town in shops and post offices into which customers are encouraged to donate their spare coins.

Adrian added: “I would like to say a massive thanks to everyone for their support so far. Local businesses have buckets and collection boxes in their shops and are encouraging customers to donate generously.”
