Police have closed a road on the outskirts of Oswestry after a Royal Mail post box suffered significant damage in an explosion.

Mount Road, near the historic racecourse, was closed at 11.17pm yesterday at the crossroads with Llansilin Road and Racecourse Road.

Forensics experts were at the scene today examining the post box.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "We were called to an incident at the old Racecourses, Oswestry. A road closure is in place on Mount Road, at the crossroads with Llanfillin Road and Racecourse Road, commonly known as Racecourse Common.

"This is while forensic officers examine a Royal Mail post box which has suffered significant damage. It is believed that the closure will be in place for approximately seven hours.

"The contents have been confirmed as damaged and Royal Mail has been notified."

Police have asked people to avoid the area if possible and find an alternative route.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 855s of September 18.

A FIREWORK may have caused an explosion inside a Royal Mail postbox in Oswestry, it’s been revealed.

Launching an appeal for witnesses, police today (Friday) confirmed forensic investigations are still on-going following the incident shortly before midnight on Thursday, which mangled the bright red postbox at the Old Racecourse.

The road was sealed off by officers for most of the day while forensic teams attended the scene.

A spokesperson said: “The incident has involved damage to a Royal Mail postbox which it is believed was caused by a firework, forensic investigations are still on-going.

“The contents have been confirmed as damaged and Royal Mail has been notified, members of the public who used the post box yesterday (September 18) are urged to contact the Royal Mail office in Oswestry.

“Police can confirm that witnesses have come forward, which identified two vehicles seen in the area after the postbox was damaged.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said “Royal Mail is co-operating with West Mercia Police following an incident last night which caused damage to its postbox on Mount Road, at the crossroads with Llansillin Road and Racecourse Road.

"Royal Mail apologises to customers for the temporary closure of this postbox. The nearest alternative posting facility is situated on Oakhurst Rd, near Oswestry fire station.”
