Postman gets creative to raise funds for hospice

A Hastings postman has raised more than just money with his creative and usual campaign in aid of a well-known local charity.

When Patrick Kavanagh, 41, father-of-two, posted a picture of himself on his Facebook page sporting a home-made loom band thong, little did he know that what started as a bit of fun would end up generating hundreds of pounds for St Michael’s Hospice.

Patrick’s old school friend David Walker decided it would be a good idea to auction the loom band creation in aid of the hospice and within days the photo of Patrick in his thong was circulating Facebook.

David said: “It has just grown and grown and we raised more than £300 in just a few days. Lots of people shared it on Facebook and it’s all just a bit of fun for charity!”

But not everybody supported their efforts. David and Alex Chapman, of the From Hastings to West Marina Facebook page, got a notification telling them that a user had complained about the ‘offending’ picture and the posts were later removed by the social media site.

Patrick said: “After the notification there were loads of comments from people saying that it’s so silly that someone’s going to moan about that when you can see so much worse.”

Bruni Llovet, head of marketing at St Michael’s Hospice, said: “We have a diverse range of Hospice supporters in the community throughout Hastings and Rother. The Hospice are so proud of all the fundraising our supporters do, even the more crazy ones which include abseiling down buildings and walking on fire.
