DOCTORS were stunned when they operated on superfit Ian Butler and found 16 holes in his heart.

He had complained of a dizzy spell during a 65-mile bike ride for a heart charity.

Surgeons then discovered that Ian, 43, from Preston, had holes as big as a 2p piece in his heart, as well as other complications.

There were so many holes that his heart looked like a block of Swiss cheese.

Postman Ian is a medical miracle, surviving for more than four decades the life-threatening defects which are thought to have existed since birth.

Ian was 20 miles into the Heartbeat event from Manchester to Blackpool when he had to pull out after experiencing dizzy spells and shortness of breath.

“The episodes only lasted for about five or 10 seconds, but I just put it down to tiredness,” he said.

“I’m a fit lad and have grown up playing football, rugby and I’m a keen walker.” When the symptoms got worse he made an appointment with his GP. The diagnosis was a simple heart flutter.

But during follow-up tests specialists found two holes in Ian’s heart, as well as a huge swelling on the right-hand side which Ian says was “like a balloon”.

And it was only when Ian underwent open heart surgery that another 14 holes were discovered.

Now Ian is on the mend and he added: “It turns out my active lifestyle actually saved me.”

He is also expected to return to work within 14 days or he will be issued with a stage warning!

I had a stroke 6 years ago , caused by hole in the heart I was 36 got all repaired off work etc , then got a stage one warning absolutely unbelievable .
