Chief operations officer encourages front-line female colleagues to apply

Chief operations officer, Sue Whalley, is delighted 700 more women will now have the opportunity to benefit from our Springboard development programme.

Sue views the scheme as an excellent way to boost the number of female managers at Royal Mail. Springboard also gives participants the confidence to informally resolve any potential issues they may come across at work.

She says: ‘We have a real opportunity to increase the number of women in managerial roles, and Springboard is an excellent tool for helping us to do so.

‘The industry benchmark for women in managerial roles is around 19%. In Royal Mail it’s around 15%. It would be fantastic to reach that level sooner rather than later.’

Times Top 50 employer for women

Sue recognises that the business is making good progress. Recently, we were named one of The Times Top 50 Employers for Women.

‘Royal Mail had never been close to appearing on that list. It is not just about supporting women at a senior level. It’s about increasing the number of women in the operation and front-line managers,’ she said.

‘Our goal was to take 1,000 women through Springboard last year. We managed to reach 1,013.

‘We are now looking at how we take Springboard to the next level.’
