Spare a thought for the dedicated postie army!

I HAVE always had a lot of time for our postmen and women, who go out in all weathers to deliver the mail, even if in these internet days it's often of the junk variety.

Workers also have to develop their own system of dealing with the dogs that eagerly come up to the letterbox you're about to put something through!

And if there is a large dog running in the front garden, you're really faced with a dilemma!

Recently I've had cause to do a lot of leafleting, the upshot of which being that my admiration for our posties has increased.

For there are two other hazards that you don't particularly realise at first, but which must be a bane of the professional deliverer's life.

The first is a letterbox placed at the bottom of a door.

Now if you've got an old or historic door, that can't be helped.

But why do they still manufacture such doors? They certainly don't do anything for the back, and must cause many postal workers to develop back ache over the years.

Equally annoying are houses that don't have a number.

You start wondering where a particular property is, especially if you're in one of those streets that have had sections built on over the years so that the numbers aren't what you'd expect them to be.

I understand poor numbering also causes difficulties for taxi drivers and pizza deliverers, and have heard tales of people just being told to go to a particular house name in such a street.

Now if a street has several hundred properties or is particularly lengthy, that certainly isn't easy!

So spare a thought for those who have the thankless task of going from door to door, even if you curse the bill that they are delivering!
