Police are investigating the theft of 18 special delivery parcels from the back of a Royal Mail van.

The van was parked at Crescent Terrace, Cheltenham last Tuesday when someone forced their way in and stole the items, which are usually high in value.

In is understood that some of the parcels contained jewellery destined for nearby jewellery stores.

Gloucestershire Police confirmed they had received a report of parcels going missing from a Royal Mail van between 9.30am and 10am on April 29.

He said: “The offender gained access and stole 18 special delivery parcels.

“The theft is being investigated through all obvious means.”

The Royal Mail employee has been suspended as a matter of procedure, while the theft is being investigated.

Royal Mail spokesman Mike Norman told the Echo: “Enquiries continue following the theft of mail from a Royal Mail van at approximately 09.30am in Crescent Terrace, Cheltenham, on April 29.

“We would appeal to anyone with information to contact police.

“We would encourage any customers with concerns about their mail to contact our Customer Services team on 08457 740 740 or visit royalmail.com.”

Anyone with information about the theft can call 101 or crimefighting charity, Crimestoppers for free on 0800 555 111.

Surely if the doors were forced because they were obviously locked the postie has done nothing wrong and shouldn't be suspended. Also with it saying they were intended for nearby businesses he wasn't off route.

Obviously there was no sign of any force on the van, hence RM believes either it was an insider job or security wasn't maintained. This accounts for the suspension.

'Forced their way in' and still postie suspended? Possibly these specials were sitting in the front cab and they smashed a window to get them. I'm just speculating, but that would correctly lead to a suspension for the postie, I'd imagine. I know for sure many posties on my patch leave all sorts on show in the front cab, even specials. Just to save themselves a few seconds on delivery!

edit: I missed that vital nugget of information from the OP '...from the back of a RM van...'. Sincerest apologies for false speculation in this case. My colleagues are still idiots tho!

What a great employer Royal Mail is. Suspend the postman adding more stress as if it was their fault. The back doors were forced. Just proves to me what I always have been told by fellow workers we are just a number they don't give two hoots about us. Can't wait to get out.

Suspension is not a punishment. It is simply a method for the employer to protect itself and its employees while the investigation is completed. I don't know why people get so stroppy about being suspended when they have not done anything wrong, just treat it as extra holiday :)

Sounds like an inside job to me. That area of Cheltenham is in a nice area of the town and would have been very busy at that time of the morning.

What a pathetic comment. God forbid it never happens to you . When it does you will realise how devious management are. They will go out there way to find this guy guilty of not following procedure.
