The vehicle believed to have been used in the Royal Mail lorry raid

Masked men raided a Royal Mail lorry parked at the delivery office in Cobham while the driver was sat inside.

Police are investigating after the vehicle was targeted at around 6.10pm on Monday April 28.

The Royal Mail lorry was parked in Cedar Road for a collection when the driver, who was sitting in the cab, heard a noise from the rear and discovered two men in balaclavas in the back of the vehicle.

It is believed the men then left the scene in a car, described as a silver or grey Nissan X Trail 4x4, travelling down Anyards Road in the direction of Portsmouth Road or the A3.

A large quantity of mobile phones were stolen from the lorry.

The two offenders seen inside were described as white, around 6ft 2in tall and of medium build. One was said to be taller than the other and one was wearing white trainers.

A third man, also wearing a balaclava, was seen in the driver's seat of the car nearby.

PC Tobie Clapcott said: "We believe that this was a planned and organised crime and it was no doubt an extremely frightening ordeal for the driver to endure.

"I would appeal for any witnesses who saw the Royal Mail van parked up in Cedar Road on the day of the offence, or may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area, to contact police.

"Similarly, we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the Nissan 4x4 vehicle parked up close to location or driving off following the offence."

As the suspect appears to be getting into the vehicle its possible that they made the rear of the lorry insecure by using bolt cutters. Or as it appears to be right outside the DO someone else was loading/unloading him and it was a quick smash and grab.

It's not hard to imagine. Some business sells a lot of mobile phones and wants them posted. The collection driver sits and waits in the cab with the back open, can't be bothered to close it all up while they bring more boxes out. Crafty Joe and his mate see this happen several times and decide to go and help themselves. If only they weren't such noisy clumsy beggars they'd have got away with it without him even noticing anything was missing either.

The two were 'around 6ft. 2in tall' but one was taller than the other?? Brilliant description.

It's hard to see if the lorry has a tail lift - if it has, it should have been closed and isolated therefore unable to be opened from the outside. But then again, I guess it's too easy to say that, as every PD has probably done it.

Ok, I apologise for missing that vital nugget of information. Driver was still sitting in his cab with the back of his open van on a public road, from the looks of it. Doesn't take a criminal mastermind to attempt to pull off that heist.
