GREENS fear they are not getting their message across to voters in next month’s European elections – because their leaflets are being sent out inside pamphlets for arch-opponents Ukip.

Edinburgh Green co-ordinator Gavin Corbett said he had received several complaints from members of the public that the Royal Mail – which delivers free election literature from all the parties – had broken the rules by putting Green leaflets inside the larger Ukip ones.

Councillor Corbett said potential Green voters might well simply decide to bin Ukip leaflets without reading them, unaware they were also throwing away the Greens’ message.

Royal Mail confirmed it was aware of the party’s complaint and said it was investigating, although it insisted the problems had only affected a “small amount of mail”.

Cllr Corbett said the complaints he has received have come from several parts of the city, including Southside, Fountainbridge, Shandon and Gorgie.

He added: “People have told us they were just about to put the Ukip leaflet in the bin when they realised at the last minute that our leaflet was inside.

“It’s against the terms of the Royal Mail’s contract with the government for handling the freepost election literature, which explicitly says leaflets should not be inside each other.

“The Greens and Ukip are at opposite ends of the political spectrum so it is a particular ­issue for us.

“Anyone who is even mildly inclined to vote Green is likely to have an aversion to Ukip and may of them are going to bin the Ukip leaflet without looking inside.”

Cllr Corbett said the main interest in the election was who was going to win the sixth seat – which Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon is widely expected to lose – and he claimed the Greens and Ukip, led nationally by Nigel Farage, were both in contention.

He said: “It’s a big problem for us if our stuff is getting lost in Ukip’s.

“Our message is around welcoming people to Scotland, we are pro a reformed Europe and internationalist

“We are quite explicit in saying we are the opposite of Ukip.”

The elections for Scotland’s members of the European Parliament take place on Thursday, May 22, though the count will not take place until the Sunday afterwards – once all the other member states of the European Union have also voted.

Six MEPs are elected to represent the whole of Scotland.

There are currently two Labour, two SNP, one Conservative and one Liberal Democrat.

Royal Mail confirmed election leaflets should not be ­delivered inside one another and said it was investigating.

A spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail is aware of issues relating to the Green Party election material and we are in discussion with them.

“We believe the issue affects a small amount of mail.”

Lets get a few facts correct here,
1 "free election literature from all the parties" nothing is "free"
2 With "junk" mail there is a hidden cost to the environment, ask any greeny and they will spout it off to you.
3 Actions are greater than words, or is it do what I tell you not what I do.
4 For some unknown reason I was at a meeting when a greeny gave us a lecture on saving the environment and then told us how he went half way round the world by plane may I add to see this rare bird (feather type). As one person pointed out that they want to stop the cheap flights for us workers but are happy for the intellect few to jet around the world to attend saving the earth summits. Pol Pot comes to my mind.

I am totally into "eco" living, would not trusts the Greens an inch, would vote for UKIP before the "greedies", more left wing than the hidden greeny agenda.

Why do I do it, the office culture accepts it and being pragmatic when there are many to be delivered its the most feasible way of delivery.
Yes its still wrong and I should not do it, but there must be a better way to collate and delivery D2Ds.
The most powerful asset RM has is its ability to physically reach every building in the country 6 days a week. A simple news letter with all the D2D attached to them would be dynamic, link that to a discount card like all the supermarkets have, that data would be priceless.

I delivered the ukip leaflet WIth five other d2d but not nested. I think the impact is lost nested or not nested if it lands on the mat with a pile of advertisements.The elections have been known about for 5 years . Rm could have cleared the decks of d2d for the next three weeks but money rules the roost now.

I can not argue about the logic in your reply but in the real world is different. We did have a full revision in our office, only 5 walks were changed, shafted would be a realistic term, the majority voted it in as they were not effected by the change and wanted the money. From that day I have taken the view if management and the union do not adopt RM policies at my work place then I will adopted a daily survival tactic. To you it is wrong, I have tried to do it right, ended up being off with stress and was bullied. Yes jobs will go and hours will be removed, my health is worth more than a yappy mouth telling me the out come of doing it wrong, Reading the posts on this forum I am sure many other posties recognise the situation I am in and may well be in a similar position.

I agree newtimes,the constant stream of aggro because I and my P/L partner are trying to do the job right is unbelievable,managers watching you prep,jamming 3 rough bags into 2 so it looks better,counting of mail,being compared to other workers who come in an hour or more early,putting a full timer on my walk when I am off so they have an extra 1hr 45 mins prep on it,if I wasn't such a stubborn sod I would have thrown the towel in ages a go,but sod em my mortgage is paid so I can afford not to worry about my job too much but I really do feel like grabbing one of the managers by the throat and headbutting him.

Re the political leaflets, be careful out there guys.
i took a call from a customer who simply used the most vile abuse all about what was going to be done to postie and me ,as i also work for royal mail,
multiple swear words and shouting. why ? all it was was a UKIP leaflet. i terminated the vile call . but if this leaflet is not required why can't customers just bin it , or use it instead of andrex don't attack me or the posties is what i wanted to say but couldn't, so be careful guys love customer services

I got told off for delivering a farmfoods leaflet to someone who hates them and only shops at lidl! As for electoral parties, couldnt care whos it is , its just another leaflet that has to be posted through every door, I prefer a bunch behind my bundle, much easier.

Nesting is poor practice, any idiot can realise that a business or party wants the flyer to fall individually onto the floor so they have to pick it up and read it for that split second before putting it in the bin. Job done, it's in their head.

If D2D's are all bundled within one large one they do not enter the head, but enter the bin very easily. D2D business is very important to us in these challenging times. Management don't enforce this at all in our office though, it seems to be a low priority on their list and about 50% of the delivery staff do it here.
