We’re looking to recruit mediators to improve our working environment

As part of the Agenda for Growth agreement with the CWU, we’re introducing mediation to the workplace.

This is to assist the existing IR framework and improve relations between teams and help resolve disputes before any action is taken – either by the company or the union.

We’re looking for applications from both front-line colleagues and managers.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a process of conflict resolution where a neutral third party is invited to intervene into a workplace situation to assist with the constructive resolution of that conflict.

Mediation provides a structured process which encourages all parties to identify, consider and discuss their past, current and future needs.

Workplace mediators encourage and facilitate open and honest dialogue between the parties, an approach that often leads to increased awareness, understanding and empathy.

The role

We’re looking to hire 10 mediators on secondments from their existing roles, five from management levels and five from CWU-grade levels.

The secondments will last for two years, and full training and support will be given. At the end of your secondment, you’ll return to your current role, or one close to it.

This is a joint initiative between Royal Mail and the CWU and both organisations will be involved in the recruitment process. If successful, you will continue to be employed by Royal Mail, and your terms and conditions won’t be affected.

How to apply

You don’t necessarily need to have any specific training or qualifications to apply. What you do need is the ability to work well with other people, often during stressful periods in their lives. You’ll need to be able to stay calm, and help others reach resolution. You’ll be a good listener, and able to build rapport with strangers quickly.

Yeah, 10 sounds about right

I was thinking about applying but then I thought 'I can't deal with people' so that sort of rules me out

Being as i went through this process last week dont hold much hope for it.

Complete waste of my time and money, if this is the way forward god help us

Royal mails way of working and dealing with the grievence , B/H process , this does not bode well, to deal with these issues in mediation

There is no after process from both sides if any party feels that there should be some clarification to see if it works or does not , which i put forward at the end

I have not heard from anyone either RM or CWU, being this was meant to be one of the first cases to be heard , lack of communication
