Postal and telecommunication workers attending the CWU annual conference voted overwhelmingly today to recommend a 'no' vote in the forthcoming Scottish Independence Referendum.
A motion recommending "all members in Scotland that they vote 'no' in the forthcoming Scottish Independence Referendum" was passed this morning at the 800-strong Conference in Bournemouth.
CWU represents 200,000 postal and telecommunication workers, including 17,000 members in Scotland. The CWU's National Executive Committee recommended a 'no' vote based on the outcome of two branch forums, a series of independent member meetings and two polls of members. The results of these polls showed the majority of Scottish members would vote 'no' (60%) and 26.3% of members would vote 'yes'.
CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: "We are recommending a 'no' vote to our Scottish members in September's Scottish Independence Referendum. This decision is based on a need for unity against austerity and the barrage of cuts from the Coalition Government and the SNP in Scotland.
"This is an extremely important constitutional debate and it is crucial that as a trade union we are able to assist our members on the impact this will have on the Scottish economy and that of the rest of the UK. The majority of our members support a 'no' vote as we found when conducting polls and holding forums. A 'no' vote would be in the best interests of our members."
CWU deputy general secretary Andy Kerr said: "We believe that Scottish independence would have a profound effect on the companies we work with. Royal Mail, Post Office Ltd and BT all have extensive networks operating in Scotland and an independent Scotland would put untold pressure on these companies and the jobs of our members.
"It's not clear what the implications would be on Royal Mail's Universal Service Obligation in an independent Scotland, the pension schemes our members are enrolled in or how it would affect the roll-out of broadband services to the inaccessible rural communities in Scotland. Independence would have a significant impact on the ability of these companies to invest in their networks."

Re: CWU calls for 'no' vote in Scottish referendum
Should a union be telling us how to vote, a yes vote would mean that in Scotland the postal service would come back into public ownership is that what the CWU are against. If there is ever a break away group from the CWU I would go too.The No group has the backing of the condems. I am not saying that the No vote is right or wrong, but what is lower than a rattle snake belly in a cart rut is the CWU decision to back a side in a very divided situation without a clear mandate from the Scottish members, or is this just a "london" based organisation dictating to a minority group north of the border. Very poor leadership, we know that already though.

CWU, you are in grave danger of alienating a large proportion of your membership by issuing this statement

Consider Scotland's biggest CWU Branch is backing a YES.

f**k New Labour especially Fatty Balls.
Tommy Sheridan is right. "Scotland has meyer pandas than Tory MPs".
I hope Coulson gets sent to jail. This is a test for the Judiciary. Let's see how impartial they are.

The same union that tells you to vote labour. YES the labour part that gave us Tony B Liar , Peter Mandelson, and the biggest lie of all WHICH NOT A SINGLE PERSON ON THIS SITE HAS EVER ANSWERED ME ON IMMIGRATIONnewtimes wrote:Should a union be telling us how to vote, a yes vote would mean that in Scotland the postal service would come back into public ownership is that what the CWU are against. Whats the question and I will reply with my opinion, its hard to answer some question because the answer given is linked to a personal belief. Bit like the politicians wanting us to answer the independent question with yes or no. How often does a politician actually answer the question asked, and up the odds with a simple yes or no answer. On the question of immigration, solve the cause of immigration not the problem.Dumpys Rusty Nuts wrote:The same union that tells you to vote labour. There was a debate on this site regarding this issue which got deleted by the head honcho TBT a few weeks ago.
I asked numerous questions regarding labours dubious policies to immigration and never got a decent reply apart from the more than obvious youre a racist
When you cannot answer the question you cast aspersions

THE QUESTION IS, did labour let the British public down regarding their immigration policy whilst it was in power. Yes.
Where to start, there are limits to how many people can fly in an aeroplane, too many it will not fly, so yes there should be a logical limit to immigration to any one area.
Supply and demand, more people than jobs will push wages down. We have homeless people, surplus of houses and immigrants living in garages and paying high rent in cash. Working excessive hours for below minimum wages and being exploited by their "own" people. Thats touching on just a few of the many issues, I read some where that the EU will let raw materials be imported with out tax but if the developing nations try adding "value" by refining these materials then import tariffs are added disproportionate. By allowing free flow off labour thats immigration with all these anomalies and restrictions in the market place then yes you have let the British public down by having an immigration policy which will sow the seeds of unrest. I have no respect for UKIP but their popularity is down to the failures of the "main stream" parties for dealing with the problems. Remember Blair is a war criminal, walking free in our country, the whole system is broken and will fail.

Re: CWU calls for 'no' vote in Scottish referendum
Are you talking about the free movement of people in Europe - which isn't Labour policy, it is enshrined in the Treaty of Rome. (Article 48)?
Or are you talking about immigration from outside the EU?
What was Labour's policy on that? And how did it effect anything?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Having a piece of paper with writing on it means nothing " Peace in our time" action speaks more than talk, then again "the pen is mightier than the sword"
Google labour immigration policy with a year added for "an" answer(s) to "What was Labour's policy on that? And how did it effect anything?" then give a reply.

Just remembered a similar road to this type of debate was taken a few weeks ago and the content was gone by the following morning.
