NORTH-EAST postie Eric Fyfe helped an unexpected package arrive when a baby was delivered in the front seat of his car.

Arriving home from a friend’s house, Eric spotted his neighbour Nauris Harjo struggling to summon an ambulance in broken English.

But the Inverurie postman came to the rescue, offering to drive Nauris and his heavily pregnant wife Ilse to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.

The couple, who are originally from Latvia, could not wait for their new arrival. And baby Nicole was born as they headed to Aberdeen on the A96.

Postman Eric, 28, said: “From what I could see, my neighbour’s wife was comfortable and capable of getting to the hospital, but when we got to about Kintore he said the head was out.

“By the time we got to Blackburn the baby was born.”

But Aberdeen to Blackburn is over 300 miles.
