Royal Mail : Rivals' threat to postie jobs ; TNT LEAVES MAIL SACKS 15% LIGHTER CITY DESK

EXCLUSIVE ROYAL Mail's workload has slumped by around 15% where rival TNT has begun delivering door-to-door, sparking fears of job losses.
TNT Post UK, part of Dutch giant POSTNL, has already left Britain's postal giant reeling by winning a string of lucrative business mail contracts with the likes of Barclays, Tesco and npower.
Royal Mail faces another big threat as TNT rolls out deliveries to millions of homes and businesses.
Around half the average Royal Mail postie's bag is already made up of "access mail" - items collected and sorted by other operators, then handed to the newly privatised operator to deliver.
Now TNT is increasingly cutting out Royal Mail altogether by expanding its own army of posties.
The company began the end-to-end service in the W postcode of London in 2012, followed by three other areas of the capital in 2013. It started door-to-door deliveries in Manchester last November and the same in Liverpool just over a week ago. Royal Mail posties in these areas deliver around 15% fewer items, the Mirror understands.
A source said: "Royal Mail still has the same fixed costs. Posties have to walk the same streets every day, regardless of how many items they have to deliver."
TNT, unlike Royal Mail, only delivers to the same street every other day. The Communication Workers Unions wants Ofcom to apply the universal service obligation - the requirement to deliver to every address in the country, six days a week - across the entire industry.
CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "Residents now face competitors who are selective about when and where they deliver mail."
Opponents have also slammed TNT's pay. But TNT said: "TNT Post is judged on the quality of service. If we do not provide the level required by clients we will not succeed."
It added it pays staff at rates above the minimum wage.

It was just bills.
Nobody wanted them.
Nobody wanted them.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
