A MEMORIAL bench has been unveiled in Crantock in honour of one of the village's most loved figures.

Paul McCann suffered a heart attack aged just 46 while he was driving a Royal Mail delivery van last year.

Around 30 people turned out to see the former postman's name etched on the bench, which has been placed in a prominent place for all to remember him by.

Mr McCann's fiancée, Glynis, has been left devastated by her loss, but has vowed to keep Paul's memory alive – and the bench will help her do just that.

She described him as a football fanatic and dog-lover.

"He was such a wonderful person in every way. He'd be chuffed to pieces with the bench; absolutely chuffed to pieces. I think he'd be quite honoured to think we've done this for him," she said.

The couple met through work at the Royal Mail after Mr McCann was transferred from Birmingham in 2005.

"It still doesn't feel right he's not here," said Ms McCann, who changed her surname after his death. "Paul was always making friends with everyone. He's my soulmate. I wanted a bench that symbolised Paul – it's an Irish bench because he had an Irish background. I had it hand-made by a Cornish chap.

Ms McCann thanked the Royal Mail and the community for their support.

"Work's been absolutely fantastic, and there's one chap from work helped me pick the bench up in his van. Another chap helped put it in. We all had a hand in putting it there and lots of people love it."
