Used cash to fund gambling habit

A FORMER postman with a gambling problem has admitted stealing parcels from the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Kilwinning.

Caught after Royal Mail surveillance operation.

Brian Lynch, 29, of Wood Street, Kilwinning, was under internal investigation after a complaint following non-receipt of greeting card style packets.

Those leading the investigation introduced test packets into Lynch’s mail in September last year – and some of it wasn’t delivered.

They same thing happened on September 10 and Royal Mail surveillance watched Lynch enter a betting shop in Kilwinning and play a roulette machine, whilst on shift.

He was then seen to enter a bakery and purchase food and drink.

It later came to light that the money within the test package was used for these purchases.

The court heard that Lynch had been struggling with a gambling problem but had been funding the habit with his wages.

He was suspended and ultimately dismissed from Royal Mail and has since been seeking help for his problem.

Sheriff Foran deferred sentence in order to receive a Criminal Justice Social Work Report and Lynch will be sentenced on Aprill 22.
