LETTERS and parcels collected by Royal Mail in Mere are now being sorted in Warminster after the town’s sorting room was closed on Saturday.

A spokesman for Royal Mail confirmed that the operation had been moved to Warminster from Monday following the closure of the sorting office and added that the town’s three post men had also transferred to the new location.

He added: “As a commercial business, operating in a market that is open to competition from other postal operators, Royal Mail is always looking at ways to reduce its costs and improve efficiency, with minimal impact on its customers.

“Royal Mail is moving its operation now to guarantee continued service to customers, who should not notice any impact on service.”

He explained that customers would not have to travel to Warminster Delivery Office to pick up parcels if they are not at home when Royal Mail leaves a “Something for you” card.

He said: “Customers wanting to collect parcels or signed for items - which cannot be left under Delivery to Neighbour - will also be able to pick these up from Mere Post Office.”

Sub-postmaster at Mere George Jeans said: “About a year ago the Mail Room in Mere had improved sorting frames fitted.

“Then not long after privatisation of Royal Mail a decision was taken to close the operation in Mere.”
