A proposal to honour one of Gloucestershire's war heroes has been turned down by the Royal Mail.

Chairman of Bourton-on-the-Water Royal British Legion, John Cork, hoped to get the village post box painted in the colours of the Victoria Cross in honour of Major General Dudley Johnson, who was awarded the medal – the highest in the British military – in 1918.

He was born in the Cotswold village in 1884 and died in 1975.

Mr Cork said: "If the Royal Mail can do it for Olympic champions why can't they do it for Victoria Cross winners?"

Tim Cowen of Royal Mail said: “Every First World War recipient of the Victoria Cross will be commemorated during the centenary. A special paving stone will be laid for each recipient on the anniversary of the act of gallantry which led to them being awarded the Victoria Cross via a commemorative paving stone scheme organised by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Four former employees of the GPO – of which Royal Mail was a part - were Victoria Cross recipients in the First World War and will be included in the national commemorations.”
