Anger over plans to turn post office into takeaway

PLANS for another food takeaway in a former post office in East Shields is not a first-class idea, says a local councillor.

An application has been made for the shop in Prince Edward Road, Harton Nook, to be turned into a hot food outlet.

But Coun Neil Maxwell says this is the last thing the area needs, and residents in nearby South Avenue say they are worried about the smell

He said: “We really don’t need another takeaway at the Nook, we could do with an affordable mini-market style shop though.

“A number of residents have been in touch and they’re very worried about the odours which might come from the takeaway.”

“There’s already a dozen outlets on this small stretch which serve food, ranging from chippies to pizza parlours.”

The proposed takeaway, which is thought to be an Indian, would open from 5.30pm to 11pm, Monday to Friday and Sundays, and from 5.30pm to 12.30am on Saturdays.

A decision will be made at the council’s planning committee on March 17.

Coun Maxwell added: “I think there’s already more than enough food choice for residents in the surrounding areas.

“For such a small stretch of shops there’s a very high proportion serving just food. We need a bigger range of alternative businesses.”

Is that not a contradiction in terms?
Most are expensive.

This is the very next building to what was the post office, half the post office building was a corner shop that went tits up after Tosscos opened up next door. There is also a Saino's and an Iceland within a minutes walk.

What we really need is a councillor who is not a total gluehead and recognises the ideal replacement would be a f***ing post office
