The deal comes after Unite union members at Stanmore Delivery Office went on strike several times across October and November.

External mediators will be appointed to resolve concerns over alleged bullying at a Royal Mail delivery office, following an agreement with trade unions.

The deal comes after Unite union members at Stanmore Delivery Office, based at the Honeypot Lane Business Centre, in Parr Road, went on strike several times across October and November, leaving households without their mail for days.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the reason for the walkouts were ‘intolerable’ working conditions, including a number of staff alleging senior managers were engaged in bullying and harassment.

Jon Millidge, group human resources director for Royal Mail, said: “It is no surprise that in a business which employs so many people, there will be disagreements from time to time.

“External mediators can play a vital role in resolving these disagreements quickly and professionally. This will help us to encourage a culture of mutual trust.”

This is the first time the business and its trade unions have jointly employed an external mediation company to help resolve issues and ensure all employees are treated fairly.

Unite’s Brian Scott said: “This approach, where mediation will assist in resolving matters at the earliest possible opportunity, can only enable a more positive working relationship between all parties.

“It will require an investment in time from all, but that can only help in the longer term to prevent long, laborious and often painful investigations out of which, very often, there are no winners.”

London Assembly Member for Brent and Harrow, councillor Navin Shah, who joined staff on the picket line when they first went on strike in October last year, said: “Joint mediation between the trade unions and Royal Mail is a positive way forward to resolve disputes fairly, amicably and speedily.

“I hope fresh scrutiny will bring about trust, respect and a better working agreement and environment between the staff and the employers.”
