A committee set up to promote women’s issues at the country’s biggest Royal Mail depot has collected hundreds of toiletries to hand out to women’s refuges in the region.

The women’s committee was set up at the South Midlands Mail Centre, in Swan Valley Way, Northampton in 2012, and is the only one of its kind in the country.

The aim of the committee, which is formed predominately of postwomen, is to promote women’s issues within the workplace, and give a voice to an under-represented part of the workforce.

Its first major initiative has been collecting toiletries to donating to women’s refuges in the Coventry, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Leicester postcode areas.

Members spent Thursday afternoon filling 500 canvas bags, which have been printed with the women’s committee logo, after being “overwhelmed” with donations. They included items worth £250 donated by Tesco.

Ann Nixon, who works as PA to the plant manager, and Kate Hudson, who works in distribution, co-ordinated the event.

Kate, who is also the CWU women’s officer, said: “What we say is it doesn’t matter if you are a manager or a rep, it matters that you are a woman. This is about women’s issues, and making their voices heard.

“We have been running for about a year, and this is our first proper initiative.

“It brings the committee together, and the bags will be going to refuges in all the areas we serve.

“It has definitely united us. We have been quite surprised at how generous people have been.”

Ann said: “It’s not just all the women here who have supported us.

“Once everyone walks into this room, we are all the same. Job titles are taken away.”
