Royal Mail’s parcel revenue has increased 8% over the nine months to December 2013 following the new size-based pricing approach for parcels, which was introduced in April last year.

Despite parcel volumes remaining flat over the nine months as a result of the switch from weight to size-based pricing, volumes did increase during December.

Royal Mail said it handled “significantly more parcels” than any other carrier in the UK parcel market in December, with 115 million items handled in total and 10 million of them delivered on the busiest day, 18 December.

Although letter revenue fell 3% on a like-for-like basis as the impact of London 2012 collectable stamp sales diminished, stamped mail – primarily Christmas cards – was up in December.

Moya Greene, Royal Mail chief executive officer, said, “Our postmen and women have again delivered Christmas for the UK. We were delighted to see that people continue to send seasonal good wishes, with Christmas cards underpinning a like-for-like increase in our December stamped mail volumes.”

Royal Mail said its group revenue was up 2% on a like-for-like basis, with parcels accounting for 51% of revenue in the nine months to December 29.

The firm, which was privatised in October 2013, said it was confident about hitting its future targets for revenue and volume trends.
“Our financial performance to date is in line with our expectations and gives us confidence that we will deliver against our key value drivers for the full year,” commented Greene.

Greene added that GLS, the group’s ground-based European parcels business, also performed well and was exploiting growth opportunities in the Eurozone.
